Taken from his The Complete Short Stories collection the story is narrated in the third person by an unnamed narrator and after reading the story the reader realises that Dahl may be exploring the theme of appearance. The landlady is terribly kind towards Billy, and offers him a cheap price for lodgings. As he hangs up his coat, Billy notices “there are no other hats or coats in the hall.” It strikes him as a little peculiar that the Bed and Breakfast is not busier, especially because it is so pleasant.
